Nutrient Dense Foods; Vegetables & Fruits

Nutrient Density Foods are foods that are high in vitamins and minerals and low in calories. Instead of spending money are supplements you should be getting them from your food intake. Your body is a machine that recognized whole foods and uses it as fuel. Your body is not a machine that recognizes foods or supplements that are created in a laboratory or pumped with hormones and and chemicals. Your body is not a wasteland do not feed it powders or potions just real food.

Mz Everythang! Robin Roberts

Mz Everythang! Robin Roberts

Incomparable. Brilliant. Stunning. Fighter. Role model. Advocate. Cancer Survivor.

Mz. Everything Robin Roberts.

I, like everyone who has grown up in this country knows who Robin Roberts is. Whatever her parents did needs to be bottled and immediately sold in Costco sized quantities. Robin Roberts fought sexism and racism throughout her career beginning in sports and later into the morning news. Funny how waking up would be unimaginable without her on Good Morning America.

The New Year is fast approaching and regardless of what your fitness goals are, like loosing those last stubborn 10 lb.s are really insignificant when you think of what Robin Roberts has come against. As superficial as it may seem to just highlight Ms. Roberts fitness regimen I thought if we all could have an understanding of how dedicated to health and fitness this woman is that this could serve as some sort of inspiration. Looking at this example to better our lives inside and out. Realizing how her healthy lifestyle mentally and physically has helped her fight cancer, her career, and anything else this lady touches.

Her nutrition intake consists of foods high in nutrient density. The key is eating foods low in calories while being high in nutrients (vitamins & minerals). Great nutrient dense foods are kale, spinach, Greek yogurt, and a wide variety of fruits, grains, and healthy fats. Remember that fiber and omega-3’s are a large factor as well. Instead of spending money on supplements your nutrient dense food intake should be your supplementation. By taking in fiber and omega-3’s your body will fight off hunger while also allowing you to eat as much as you please since there is little to no calories in nutrient dense food sources.

And… REMEMBER TO EXERCISE!!! It’s a no brainer. Eating Clean + Exercise = a Healthier YOU

Don’t Cook Your Greens to Death Eat Them Raw

Don’t Cook Your Greens to Death Eat Them Raw

Greens are known worldwide for their vitamins, high fiber, and multitude of nutrients. But, did you know that your cooking all of these components of these Superfoods every time you boil/steam/bake,or dehydrate them. You are literally killing them every time you raise the temp on them. For real.

The best way to insure optimal health by getting everything and then some out of your greens is to EAT THEM RAW. Don’t worry I’m not here to try to sway you towards the raw food movement ;-D I’m just here to tell you if you don’t own a good blender (notice I said “good” blender/juicer….quality does help!) it’s about time you do.

Your probably asking yourself so how do I eat them raw? The obvious answer it salads and my all time fave smoothies. Just grab a handful of greens, preferably kale or spinach since them blend beautifully with anything else you combine it with(similar to Tofu), and add water/soy/milk, and your choice of fruit or protein powder. It’s fast and easy with a lot less clean up involved with the added bonus that your getting the best out of all of your greens. BTW be a little leery of the collards they can get pretty spicy in a smoothie. Believe me…. the dog won’t even get near it. Honestly, I tried and she didn’t.

Run Tarahumara Style w/ Chia & Pinole

Run Tarahumara Style w/ Chia & Pinole

If you’ve ever ran before than you’ve probably heard of the book Born to Run about the Tarahumara tribe in Mexico who are know to run bare feet for hundred’s of miles nonstop for pure enjoyment. Their diet is primarily made up of two things Pinole and Chia Seeds. These two sources are known to have great energy boosts and are a huge help to the Tarahumara people and other runners (newbies and athletes alike).

I tried for myself a few recipes that were noted in Born to Run and found them very helpful with my running with ample energy throughout the rest of my day. Pinole is most commonly known as Cornmeal/Maize and is toasted in a skillet on low to medium heat. They most commonly make it into a paste or even put into a drink.

Here’s the paste lowdown/recipe;

1/2 cup cornmeal, ground as fine as possible (Whole Foods Grain section peeps ;-D)

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

1 Tbsp brown sugar, honey, or agave nectar

Chia seeds (optional but I do recommend it)

Toast the Cornmeal on low to medium heat, and be careful because it toasts FAST! If you burn it the “toastyness” will over power the flavor of the paste….believe me I should know it was not cute the first time :-( Then take the toasted Cornmeal and transfer it into a bowl. Add the remaining ingredients. After the remaining ingredients are added then add your water. Be careful with the “water” step you control how much water you put into. Remember that the key is to add enough water until it becomes a paste.  After you’ve done all of these steps you can either put the paste into Tupperware or bake it at 350 * till’ it has a brownie consistency. I usually just put it in Tupperware and eat a tablespoon of the paste before a run on my way out the house first thing in the morning.

Here’s the drank lowdown/recipe;

10 oz of water or a bottled water (easier to grab and go if your a busy body like me)

1 Tbsp dry chia seeds

a few teaspoons lemon or lime juice

honey or agave nectar, to taste (optional I usually don’t add this but you can do your own thing :-D)

Add all of your ingredients to your water and let it sit for a couple minutes. Chia Seeds are like a gel consistency that absorb water. The texture might be odd to you at first but after a couple of times you won’t care. Chia also has a slimey consistency as well, so there might be a lil’ to overcome but you’ll get over it. Et VOILA! You have your Chia Fresca/a.k.a Tarahumara Drank to kick butt and take names on your next run.
